My husband and I have had the privilege of traveling to Wales twice since we have been together – once while we were dating and once while married. We keep traveling back to most importantly see his family, but also to take in the beauty that is Wales. One of our favorite places to visit while in Wales is Rhossili Bay because of it’s amazing views… but more on this later.
We try to travel back to the UK at least once a year to visit his family, but since airfare can be quite pricey to travel across the pond, we sometimes can only make it every other year. Gareth has family and friends in both England and Wales, so we usually start out journey in England, and then make our way down to Wales to visit his wonderful family.
The journey from Wolverhampton, England (the cute little town where Gareth is from) to the southwestern part of Wales in Swansea is about 3 hours. We usually take the scenic route that goes through the countryside and the views are just indescribable. There are small mountains and green hills that peep out over the hedge-lined streets. Oh, and by the way the two-way streets are the size of 1 lane in America, and the speed limit is like being on the interstate (60mph). Once you get past the fact that you are driving incredibly fast through windy roads, the view is so refreshing and green and untouched by the rest of the world.
While in Wales we always make a point to spend time with and enjoy his family, but then we always somehow end up at Rhossili Bay. Now, I bet your wondering why we continue to travel back to this one spot in Wales… and here are the reasons why:
I have lived at the beach (Virginia Beach,VA) my entire life, and I can confidently and without hesitation say that Rhossili Bay is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. Compared to our flat beaches here in Virginia, Rhossili sports 3 miles of cliff lined beaches. The cliffs in the winter months are green with yellow patches of wildflowers, and are usually covered with grazing sheep. There are panoramic views and everywhere you look there is an opportunity to capture the beautiful scene. The past couple times we’ve been, there have been but a handful of people either walking the cliffs or the beach, and someone has always been nice enough to stop to take those necessary touristy pictures of us. Every moment we’ve shared at Rhossili has been beautiful – the beach, the cliffs, and the people.
Since Gareth and I aren’t the most outdoorsy types, we usually just enjoy the view by walking down a gravel path alongside a fence lined hill. However, we have seen people hiking the cliffs, rock climbing, and walking along the beach itself. Although we’ve never seen surfers, the waves in this area are surf-able, but the water can be quite icy so a wet suit is probably necessary. What I like the most about this spot is that it is accessible to everyone, regardless of their athletic ability. You can be as active at this site as you want to be, but for us… we will most likely just stick with moseying along the gravel paths.
Yes, thats right… we are very much food driven people, and we like to eat! Another reason we keep going back is because of the chance to pop into The Bay Bistro and Coffee House. This quaint cafe is located where the road ends and the cliff lined walkway begins at Rhossili Bay. It is high up on the cliff so the views from the cafe are spectacular. Not only is the view incredible, but the cuisine is quintessential British, and they serve a nice cup of tea with scones and clotted cream. This spot for me was the cherry on top to the visit to Rhossili Bay. We have always gone right before sunset so have stuck with light bites, but the cafe serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Go people… you will not regret it!
Well this is it, our top 3 reasons for retuning to Rhossili Bay every chance we get. We hope that you can make it out to that part of the world for breathtaking views, adventure and good eats! (P.S. – If you do… let us know your thoughts!)
