This past month I started to read Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and although I’m only at chapter two, it has already challenged me greatly. One of my fellow blogger friends recommended the book to me a while ago, and I just recently received it as a gift. Coincidently, I recently was browsing through some Ted talks, and came across an incredible speech by Brené called The Power of Vulnerability. I ended up watching the talk before reading the book, and now in hindsight I’m glad I did, because throughout the book she references the talk quite a bit.
The whole premise of the book is surrounded around the idea that vulnerability is neither a positive nor negative emotion. Instead, vulnerability is something we have to feel before uncertainty or complete risk. Instead of living a controlled and comfortable life, the book encourages you to [dare greatly] through whole hearted living. Her book is equal parts research and real-life story telling. I’m loving it!
Best Brené Brown thought:
It starts to make sense that we dismiss vulnerability as weakness only when we realize that we’ve confused feeling with failing and emotions with liabilities. If we want to reclaim the essential emotional part of our life and reignite our passion and purpose, we have to learn how to own and engage with our vulnerability and how to feel the emotions that come with it.
Love this quote, because so often I talk myself out of doing something for fear of being vulnerable and uncertain of the outcome. Wouldn’t it be awesome if our emotions didn’t control us or hold us back from our destiny?
Brené, is definitely speaking to my hopes and dreams so far in this book, and I have to say… it’s a must read.
I’m sure as I get further in reading the book I will have more thoughts to add, so stay tuned! Until then, let me know your thoughts. I’d love to hear how her work has influenced you. Comment below!
